the Unevent

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

I went to an “unevent” this week in London.  I have to say it was certainly not uninspiring! I don’t often come out of a event saying I could have listened for another 3 hrs, 3 days even and not got bored. But that is exactly what happened!

Scott Stratten (@unmarketing on twitter) is an amazing speaker – something to strive for in my toastmaster’s speaking. He is witty without being obnoxious, down to earth with out being to impartial and very expressive. He has the passion.

I haven’t quite got through the entire book “unmarketing” yet. Get it here.  But so far it is AWESOME! It’s very basic marketing rules are easy to read and very easy to live by.

Here’s what I learned at the unconference:

1. We spread AWESOME. If it’s not awesome don’t write it/say it/design it etc….and certainly don’t spread it.

2. Stop Marketing. Start engaging. (also the subtitle of the book)

3. There is no ROI for social media. Scratch that.. there is no Monetary ROI for social media in the true sense of the meaning – there is ROI in the form of Personal & Brand growth, relationships (both online & offline)  and amazing customer service.

4. He doesn’t care about spelling errors either – he cares about getting the info out there and if it has a few spelling errors or grammatical errors. So what.. if the content is AWESOME! It doesn’t matter. I think I love this man!

5. SEO (search engine optimization) doesn’t matter either… for the very same reason.

6. Your front line workers (the least paid ones) are your best marketing tool. = you should be paying them a lot more!

I love reading Scott’s blog at unmarketing.com but the one that has me laughing and sometimes crying is the blog at Yummy Mummy’s Un Daddy.

If you are not following @unmarketing – Do so NOW! it is definitely worth the effort.

By the Way: Kudo’s to the organizers of this “unevent” it was a fabulous Unevent and I hope to be apart of more of them in the future.  The Delta Armories is a beautiful building and a fabulous location for events such as these.

PS. The Deep Fried Mars bars were amazing!

PodCamp Toronto 2010

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

As Dave Fleet put it  “hanging out with 900 friends” this past weekend  at PodCamp Toronto was a great experience. It was a great experience because:

1. I got to see some amazing presentations by some of the best in the industry.

2. I got to go with a friend & colleague who introduced me to many new people & ideas.

3. I got to meet some “friends” from social networks in person and realize that we can really be friends outside of twitter, facebook & other networks.

4. I got to network with over 900 people and not feel intimidated by names, brands or knowledge.

There was something there for everyone whether you were a newbie or an “Expert”

One of my favorite sessions was about Pie Charts. Sound Boring? nope. It wasn’t and I think it had a lot to do with the presenter Zoe Siskos. She was able to combine a deathly boring subject (to some) with a great sense of humour and a new approach to visualizing and creating pie charts. For a Graphic Designer this was especially refreshing. Never again will I design a pie chart in the shape of a pie.

There was even something there for the “mummy” in me. One of the sessions was a panel discussion with Erich Ehm about communities for women. Her website is one of my favorite mummy communities “The Yummy Mummy Club” which started from the need to vent about the very real, very difficult career of being a mom.

There is much to be said about these types of events I have never come home and said “that was a waste of time” Here is what a few local friends have said about the weekend:

Andrea Stenberg at The Baby Boomer Entrepreneur wrote a great post about making the most of going to an event like this.

Ryan Wiseman from “Take on the Web”  who was also a speaker at #pcto2010 (that’s twitter talk for PodCamp Toronto 2010) posted a video blog about the weekend here.

It truly was a fabulous weekend. Thank you to the many organizers, volunteers and speakers for making it so worth while. See you in 2011!

Making my (work) life easier!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I’m always on the lookout for tools and gadgets that are going to make my (work) life easier… I have a couple of web tools I use everyday or almost every day when designing or just basically running my business.

But today I came across a link via twitter that is heaven sent…..

http://vectips.com/tricks/10-free-and-extremely-useful-illustrator-scripts – It’s a bunch of scripts for illustrator that makes things like converting colours easier.

If you are a designer it’s little things like these that make your life easier and your work flow faster not to mention the adrenaline boost when you encounter exciting things like this!

Maybe it’s just the geek in me…

My other favorite tools….

Twitter Micro Blogging tool (See Andrea’s new Blog about twitter)

Skype – Instant messaging service

Google Analytics – Stats for your website

Woopra -  Stats for your website (Live!) you can actually talk to the people who are roaming around on your site this very minute….

Filezilla – FTP file Transfer

Pando – Send up to a 1G file by e-mail

Acrobat PDF -  I use this for Proofing files… It’s great! My clients can comment right on the PDF and send it back to me. (Client’s only need a reader)

They are all free except for Adobe Acrobat.

I’d love to hear about your favorite web tool… or things that make your work/life easier.
